Self-portrait
Project type
Oil on canvas

2019
Following a visit to a portrait gallery, I became increasingly aware of the dominance of hyper-detailed self-representation, where technical precision often serves as proof of artistic legitimacy. The self, in these works, appeared flattened into surface, reduced to a faithful rendering of physical likeness.
This project resists that tradition. Rather than reproducing my external features, I interrogate the instability of identity through colour, distortion, and form. The composition privileges psychological presence over anatomical accuracy. Imperfection is not treated as flaw but as structure. It becomes a site of meaning, a deliberate disruption of aesthetic harmony.
Embedded within the surface are subtle visual markers that reference formative experiences. These elements are not illustrative but symbolic, operating beneath the immediate reading of the image.
The work positions self-portraiture not as replication, but as translation: an attempt to visualise the internal, fractured, and continuously shifting self.
